Casa DR emerges from the transformation of a 200-square-metre duplex apartment in Madrid, designed for a family with three daughters who wanted to give their home a new life. More than a simple renovation, the project began with the intention of creating a space that could reflect the way they live, interact, and experience everyday family life.

The intervention reorganises the house through openness, connection, and the presence of natural light. The introduction of new skylights allows light to enter in unexpected ways, moving across different heights and filling the shared spaces with a warm and constantly changing atmosphere throughout the day. Light is understood not only as a functional element, but as an essential part of the home’s identity.

From the main entrance, the project seeks to create a clear and recognisable spatial sequence. A large framed opening marks the transition into the living room, almost as if composing a domestic scene or a framed view within the house itself. Rather than separating spaces, the intervention focuses on connecting them, creating visual continuity and a more open perception of the entire home.

The kitchen remains visually connected to the living area through a light and transparent divider that provides a certain degree of independence while maintaining the relationship between both spaces. This decision avoids the traditional compartmentalisation of the home and instead creates a more fluid environment, where each room remains in constant dialogue with the others through harmony and family connection.

Each space is also defined by its materials and finishes, carefully chosen to express the personality of the family who inhabits it. Textures, colours, and surfaces appear with precision, shaping atmospheres that speak not only about who they are today, but also about who they aspire to become over time.

The staircase plays a central role within the project. Beyond connecting the two floors, it becomes the element that gives the house its character and identity, a sculptural presence around which much of the domestic life unfolds.

Casa DR understands renovation as a sensitive process of transformation, where architecture and everyday life become deeply intertwined, creating a home that feels open, luminous, and closely connected to the identity of the family living within it.
